    Dear Rabbi and Henny,

This is to thank you for your hospitality and kindness. It really means a lot to me to see the love and hachnasat orchim in your home.

I would also like to ask if anyone at your last wedding returned my umbrella, which I lent to someone I don't know, during the chuppah.

Wishing you and your guests a fruitful, healthy summer of shlaymut haAretz and binyan haMikdash.
and kabbalat haTorah with simcha and pnimiyut.

    Dear Rabbi & Rebbetzin Machlis,

It's an honor to be able to post a comment on your webpage.

Eight years ago, I was blessed to be connected with you for one of my very first Shabbat experiences in Jerusalem. I have remembered you always, and I've kept in mind the amazing energy of kedushah that you shared with me so long ago. You made such a deep impression on me- as people actualizing the concept of One People (&, truly, One World)- all through Torah living.

I have tried, on countless occasions over the years, to describe your family's chessed and warmth, when attempting to convey the depth and beauty of my Israel experiences. Words are simply insufficient.
In planning for my upcoming return to Israel (with my parents, one of my sisters, and six other relatives!!!), I stumbled across your website! I'm overjoyed that I will, again, have the opportunity to spend Shabbat with you and that I will be able to fully share such an inspirational experience with my family!

    Thank you always!!!!

    Sincerely,
    Becky

I was there when it all began in 1979. I was a student at Ohr Someyach, which was right near their apartment. I would often bring people there for a Shabbos seuda. My daughter, who is attending a seminary in Eretz Yisroel this year mentioned to me that she and her friends sometimes eat there. She told me there was a website so I came to this site and donated to this worthy endeavor.

I was a Tel Aviv University student in 1990 when I had the privilege of having Shabbat lunch at your home (hi to Mindi!). When I found out about this web site, I couldn't believe it...I was not observant at that time, but as a result of many uplifting Shabbat experiences -- including those at your house -- I am proud to say I am now!

As a writer and editor, I also wrote a little piece about your family for the New Jersey Jewish News, where I work. It will be published in our upcoming Israel at 60 supplement! My husband and I would also like to make a donation.

That was the most unbelievable chasuna!! May you have much nachas from the young couple and from the rest of the family.
I was so amazed-and still am- to see how EVERYONE, every single one of your guests, was treated like a king/queen and made to feel so important! The whole family is such an example of true ahavas yisroel.
I have never experienced a shabbos by you, but judging from the wedding, it must be the most beautiful and heartwarming experience. Hashem should continue to bless you that you be able to continue your good work for klal yisroel.
May you make many more simchas in the future. Thank you- we really had a very special time!

With a genalogy in shambles, nearly no tradition except a good ossibility of a connection with the "jewish Mayflower," almost no encouragment whatsoever, painful attempts to approach a chabad and a recently discovered trove of Judaica in my Mother's heirlooms [kept in secret for three generations], I find your site warm and inspiring.

When I first heard about Rav Machlis's meals for hundreds, I assumed they would serve a few pieces of fish, tell a few divrei torah, and that's it. But the food is great and plentiful, and Rav Machlis creates an environment that encourages people to grow and share and learn from each other, without pressure. Its a great experience that everyone, even those who have family here, should check out at least once!

Hello to Mordechai, Henny and the entire Machlis family!!!
It is such a joy to have foun this website. To have such an opportunity to be able to express our infinite gratitude and love for this precious family who have the courage and strength to live with such emunah and to reach out to people and literally be zocheh to be the messengers from Hashem, who change people's lives, is such an honor.
Back in 1996, when I was 18 and in Bar Ilan University, I was blessed to have experienced classes with Rabbi Machlis and shabbosim by his home. These experiences left an indelible impression on my soul and to this day serve as inspiration for the chesed that my husband and I try to do.
Thank you for being my spiritual family in Israel, thank you for being my models for life, thank you for your kindnesses, your nonjudgementalism, your warmth. These were all healing powers that I needed. Thank you for facilitating Sony and my marriage and for being a special part of our wedding. Thank you for your children. We appreciate the chizuk we receive simply by thinking of you and your perspectives during challenging moments in life. We love you very much! We never forget you.

I just found R. Machils's web page tonight, and a smile came across my face. I left Israel in Oct. of 2001, and spent my last Shabbat with Mordachi & Henny. I first met Mordachi back in 1997, and I never regreted it for one minute. I was taken in to thier family like I was one of thier own children, and I became a permenant fixture at thier house for Shabbat & Chagiam. I left Israel to take care of my late brother in law who was dying from cancer, Mordachi was always saying Brett's name in every mishaberach. I have never met such a wounderful man, and an equally wounderful woman his Beshert, his Eshet Chiyal Henny.
I plan on returning home to Israel in the next few years permenatlly, and I promise that my first Shabbat home will be seated at the home of the Machlis's and dancing and singing w/ Mordachi.

My Blessings to a wounderful family, may they only know of Simchas, and Mazels.

    Sincerly Dov-Bear formally of Tel-Aviv.

When I was in yeshiva in Israel about 10 years ago, several of my friends and I used to frequent the Machlis house quite often. Besides the fact that the food was better than Yeshivas, there was no shabbos experience like it anywhere in the world. I really admire the trait of truly opening one's house to others and sharing everything that you have. Besides us guys, who would have had a meal anyways there were poor people who probably had no food at home, if they had a home, there were lonely people. This is one of the pillars of chesed of the world.

I was in Israel eons ago lets say 8 years ago. That was my first and last time (so far) in Israel. I was studying in a very religious seminary. Our school did not approve of us(a group of girls) attending machlis for a shabbos meal because it is technically a coed event. whatever! It was interesting for sure. I remember tables and tables, people, and specifically lots of chicken. I do not remember spending much time with the members of the family. But I remember my personal experience there. If my facial expression could match my feelings it would be wide eyed It definately stood out in my mind. another thing is that I did not even know that machlis had a website.YOu know like they say "I knew him before he became a big celebrity. I knew him when he was this short and before he matured in so many ways" well I knew machlis before they got public recognition and before they had a website. My conclusion is everyone needs a shabbos meal at machlis.

a letter i wrote to my mom back home in los angeles after i was with the Machlis family. With Henny and her daughters working around the small space in the kitchen, and us a group of 5 girls sitting with them with trays on our laps...I have never felt so much more at home.

    hi mommy-
these are the people who we went to last week for shabbat dinner. it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. they spread the light of the shabbat to so many people who walk through their door- and they do it with the right attitude filled with love, warmth, family, joy, song, good food, and lots of life. let them serve as inpiration to us and we can learn from them. lets donate to this special special family- and help them continue spreading the love for HASHEM with boundless love instead of baseless hatred. they are doing their part to bring about the redemption of the jewish people, lets do our part as well. are you in partner? i cant do it without you...

Can anyone even measure how much good Rabbi Machlis does for the Jewish ppl? I remember when I was in yeshiva, "Machlis" was always a Shabbos alternative -- never (with one minor exception) was the door closed, and even homeless people could, at a minimum, find a van to sleep in to escape the elements.

People who do such good should never lack anything.

I am an old-timer of the Machlis "Ohel". I used to walk over the Aish guys or the last of the Reb Shuster / Jeff Seidel group from the Kotel Shabbos nights. When I would come the tables were "relatively" small. Friday nights were 20 or so and lunches were only a handful of guests.

My first dinner there was special but what really started my relationship with them was that they invited me back for lunch the next day...so I went. When I showed up at their door, the welcome was so warm and genuine, I became "hooked" on the Machlis Family. Rebbetzin Henny said - no one ever came back the next day... with a huge smile.

Another story - One of the guests became angry because he was unhappy with his food portion - threw the plate over at the table and stormed out. Rabbi Machlis ran after him calming him down telling him that he was sorry and will serve him whatever he needs.

Many other stories - the beet juice, the soup that never ended, the German (Jewish) boy who cried to me on the walk home about them etc...

It is a zechus to know them and look forward to hopefully seeing them soon in Yerushalim.

    B'ahavah, Yakov

I was trying to find a proper forum to say over maiseh's or torah from the rebbe Rav Machlis so i thought maybe this would be the proper place. in this past weeks parshah we find that Hashem promises the children of Israel that all the plagues that he punished their Egyptian taskmasters with he would never place on the Bnei Yisroel and concludes by pointing out Ani Hashem Rofecha(Exodus.15-26) I am the Lor-d your healer. The word rofecha is an interesting one. there is dagesh in the Pey--leaving us with the sound ro--Fecha. Had there been a dagehs in the Pey the wod would be pronounced ro--Pecha. there are instances where the word is written with a dagesh, for instance the source that commands us to seek out a cure from medical proffesionals for our diseases comes from a passage in the talmud (baba kamma 85A) based on a verse also in Exodus(21:19) --V'raPo yiraPeh-- here when talking about seeking out a cure there is a dagesh in the Peh. The obvious question is why? when is a dagesh apropriate? and when not? Rav Machlis explained that the dagesh represents a certain, emphasis or strength, a healing that comes with significant force. Perhaps that healing is the healing that comes with serious side affects, as the joke goes, "u have to be totally healthy to take this medicine its so strong and its side affects are so many"-- that is the human healing--of Rapoh Yirapeh. But when G-d heals, he can heal without side affects, or leaving a scar, or bed rest, or medicine induced nausea. When G-d took the rib out of adam, he anaesthetized him, excised his rib and then closed him up so well, that except for the longing that was placed in his heart, we have no physical sign of the loss. He has a softer healing of "ani Hashem ro-Fecha" without the dagesh--the emphasis, the side affects. May it be thy will, Master of the world, that we and all our medical proffesionals learn from your ways, and heal all our diseases, be they physical, spiritual, emotional, pschological, religious, however they manifest themselves speedily in our days, with the healing of "RoFecha", with neat and healthy cures. stay tuned for imy"H torah

Besides the wonderful Machlis experience on Shabat I've being experiencing since 1982 when I first came to Israel to produce a film, THERE'S MORE THAN MEETS THE SENSES:

Mordechai and Henny and their children are scholars, always seaching honestly for and sharing the truth. Their weekday classes related to Jewish tradition are intellectually probing, enjoyable and spiritually exciting.

We are all UNIQUE YET PART OF THE JEWISH and/or WORLD FAMILY to the Machis clan. Feeling the special nature in each of us is a teaching we carry out of their home each time we are there.

These are truly humble, giving people with intellectual integrity and souls worthy of all we give back to them.

I'll tell you a story about Rabbi Machlis that happened to me actually the first time I went there. Actually it was an out shabbos, and you know how it is, one guy gets the idea to go to the Machlis's and before you know it we had a group of 15 people. We did call ahead. But when we got there it started filling up. They moved all the tables outside. And people were sitting knee to chair. Still more people came. So we started feeling guilty about it. One of the guys stood up and told Rabbi Machlis that we would leave to make room and that we have plenty of food in Yeshiva and can eat there. And he replied:

"Please don't go. I will be very very upset if you leave!"

It went back and forth a bit more but Rabbi Machlis was very firm in insisting we not leave. He makes everybody feel as welcome as possible.

inspired by a new blog dedicated to the Machlis family of Jerusalem, I wanted to share a memorable moment from my past. Aish Hatorah has written a couple beautiful articles about this incredibly special family, but I thought I would add my two cents as well. I traveled to Israel for the first time in July 1997. It was a trip of firsts - my first trip overseas, my first exposure to Orthodox Judaism, my first Shabbos, the first time I spent time in a place where there were more than a handful of Jews. During that month, I went through so many experiences that I then had to take home and integrate into my life. One of those experiences was the beauty of Shabbos. I was fortunate to stay in the Old City of Jerusalem for one Shabbos of that month. On the following New Year's Eve, when asked what the most memorable day of my year had been, that Shabbos was the first day that came to mind. After watching the sun set over the Kotel (which can't be described in words), a few friends and I traveled to Ma'alot Dafna, where the Machlis's live. They have an open home on Shabbos, and many, many people take them up on their hospitality each week. We arrived along with about a hundred other people. Tables were crammed into every corner of the modest apartment. Children ran around singing songs and welcoming all the guests. Tons of food was prepared for the meal. The apartment held a very recent addition that week - air conditioning to help cool down the extremely hot Jerusalem summer. It was pumping hard, doing it's job, until it hit a snag. All the lights in the apartment went out. There were a few gasps from the guests, and we sat in the dark. Instead of getting upset or panicking, since nothing could be done on Shabbos, Rabbi Machlis stood up and asked everyone to be calm. He then began speaking about how lucky we were that the lights were out. He spoke about how lucky we were to have this opportunity to really appreciate the beauty of the Shabbos candles that his wife had lit in honor of Shabbos. How they illuminate and usher in Shabbos the way Hashem illuminates our soul. Wow. I am still speechless when I remember those beautiful moments and the incredible perspective Rabbi Machlis shared with us. The lights came back on a few minutes later but I kind of wished they had stayed off. That night was certainly one to remember.

B"H I first attended some of Rabbi Machlis' shabbat meals in the summer of 2003. From the first it was clear that his whole family is very special and loving. So many people have received so much from knowing the Machlis family, myself included. A love and profound knowledge of Judaism, chesed, warmth and respect for all are in the very fabric of the Machlis home.

I feel speechless every time i try to put into words to g-d and to you my deep appreciation for your profound godly influence upon my life.
there are no words to describe what your shabbat meals... or should i say "shabbat spiritual experiences" over the past year have meant to me in my personal journey for the truth. THANK YOU!
last night on my way to work, i walked a way i never walk to catch my bus... and now i know why! i met a regular attender at your shabbat table who told me about your web site: www.machlis.org, now i know i met this person divinely appointed of hashem...
because after work i spent 3 hours (6:30-9:30am) reading EVERYTHING on the web site and shedding many tears & praying. the whole time i read it, i felt holy presences... angels around me. your "chesed" is VERY, VERY H-O-L-Y work; angels , as well as humans are witnesses of this.
henny you are "aishes chayil"! rabbi, you are " well known in the councils"... you are an "elder of the land" of israel!
you both are receiving the fruits of your hands... and you are being praised in the gates of jerusalem by your very own deeds.(proverbs 31).
i love you both most dearly.

    most amazing thing on earth
what a beautiful Mitzvah you do I dont know anyone in the world who does what you are doing and with so much love and passion, you are like angels. I pray to G-D that he should give you the strength and the resources for this great kindness you and your family perform with so many people.

    unforgettable
I went for a shabbos at the Machlis' house two summers ago, and i will never forget such warmth and hospitality.. They themselves are shining examples of what Jews should aspire to.
